10th witness testifies in case against Ershad

ABM Nurunnabi, the then Bureau of Anti-Corruption (BAC) official testified as the 10th witness on Monday in the radar purchase scam case filed against former president HM Ershad and three others.

Judge M Nurul Islam of theDhakadivisionalSpecial Judge Courtrecorded the statement of Nurunnabi, also a member of the investigation panel formed by the BAC to probe the allegations.

In his deposition, Nurunnabi said he visited the Defence Ministry on February 9, 1992 as a member of the investigation team and seized three files from there.

Later, the defence lawyers cross-examined him.

Upon completion of the deposition, the court fixed April 18 to record the statement of the next witness in the case.

The BAC filed the case on May 4, 1992 against the former military ruler and three others.

The charge-sheet was submitted in the case on October 27, 1994. The court framed charges against the accused on August 12, 1995.

The other accused in the case are former Air Force chief Air Vice-Marshal (retd) Sultan Mahmud, former Air Force chief Momtaj Uddin Ahmed, and Director of United Traders AKM Musa.

Ershad skipped the court on Monday although the two former Air Force officials appeared before it. On the other hand, Musa is on the run.

According to the case statement, the accused, including Ershad, in collusion with each other, bought a high-powered and two low-looking level radars that caused a loss of Tk 640,442,918 to the national exchequer. UNB
