12pc people still not getting safe water: DPHE

The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) officials on Thursday said about 12 percent of the country’s population are still living beyond the coverage of safe drinking water.

At a national seminar marking the World Water Day to be observed on Thursday, they also said DPHE will establish 1,25,000 new arsenic-free water sources in the current fiscal in a bid to ensure safe water supply to people.

They stressed increasing surface-water sourcing technologies to tackle the water crisis in coming days.

The national seminar was jointly organised by DPHE, Wash Alliance, World Bank, and NGO Forum at the DPHE auditorium.

Chaired by DPHE chief engineer M Nuruzzaman, the programme was also addressed by Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh Urs Herren, European Union head of delegation to Bangladesh William Hanna and World Bank water and sanitation specialist Mark Ilari.
