35 injured in clash ahead of Barisal Union Parishad election

Thirty-five people were injured in a clash between the supporters of two Union Parishad Chairman candidates at Lalganj Bazar in Mehendiganj upazila on Friday night, ahead of Ulania Union Parishad election billed for December 10.

Abidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mehendiganj Police Station, said a mobile court fined Awami League rebel candidate Ruma Sardar Tk 5000 for violating election code of conduct.

The supporters of AL candidate Kazi Abdul Halim teased the supporters of Ruma Sardar after the mobile court order , triggering an altercation between the supporters of the two candidates.

As a sequel to the altercation, both groups thronged Lalkhan Bazar around 9 pm and attacked each other. They also threw brick-bats at each other, leaving 25/30 people injured.

At one stage, a team of police, from Lalkhan Bazar camp, tried to disperse them. The attackers also swooped on the police camp, hurting five/six policemen and forcing them to take action.

Police also fired 46 rounds of bullets in the air to bring the situation under control. Six policemen were taken to Mehendiganj upazila health complex for treatment.
