5 bombs explode in DU campus

Three locally-made crude bombs exploded in the Dhaka University campus in the evening ahead of Sunday’s countrywide dawn-to-dusk shutdown called by the BNP-led 18-Party Alliance.

Proctor Amjad Ali said that the bombs went off between 5:15pm and 5:45pm.

He said that unidentified miscreants lobbed a bomb at the campus residence of the university’s Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof AAMS Arifin Siddiqui , but he was not there during the blast.

Another bomb exploded in front of the Institute of Modern Languages, yet another near Rokeya Hall and two others near the Salimullah Muslim Hall.

The proctor said that the explosions were aimed at creating panic on the campus ahead of Sunday’s shutdown.

Security measures in the campus were beefed up after the police was informed of the explosions, he said.

Two vehicles were torched in the city’s Ramna and Azimpur areas on Saturday afternoon ahead of the countrywide dawn-to-dusk shutdown.
