5 journos hurt in BCL attack at DU: 6 held

Five journalists were injured in an attack allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists on the Dhaka University campus as they went to gather information about their ‘extortion’ on Fuller Road.The university authorities identified 21 of those involved in the attack and handed six of them over to police.
Witnesses said a group of BCL workers of SM Hall unit snatching money and valuables from passengers of passing vehicles on the Fuller Road near the SM Hall from Saturday midnight.
On information, the university correspondents went to the spot for gathering information about the incident.
As the reporters arrived at the spot, an altercation took place with the BCL men as they hit the newsmen with sticks and iron rods at one stage of the altercation, leaving the five reporters injured.
The injured reporters were identified as Shariful Islam, a senior reporter of Prothom Alo, Ahmed Zaif, DU Correspondent of Prothom Alo, Sujon Mondol of bdnews24.com, Protik Chakrawarty of Daily Star and Dulal Samaddar of BSS.
Informed, DU Proctor Amjad Ali along with police rushed to the spot and detained six BCL workers from different rooms of the SM Hall around 8 am.
The six BCL men are Sayeed of Music department, Oitijhya of History department, Akib Uddin Ahmed of Mass Communication and Journalism department and Tanvir and Murad of Finance department.
Later, the Proctor handed the six BCL workers to Shahbagh police.
Contacted, BCL DU unit president Mehdi Hasan denied the arrested people’s link with BCL, saying that no extortionist can be a BCL member. UNB
