BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday held government-backed criminals responsible for the vehicle torching and bomb blasts near his party’s central office after a protest rally.
“The incidents of torching vehicles, including that of media, and cocktail blasts took place just after the peaceful ending of our protest rally. The government-backed terrorists were involved in the incidents,” he said.
Fakhrul brought the allegation at a press briefing held at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office in the evening.
Earlier in the day, the party staged a rally in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office protesting Sunday’s ‘gun attack’ on Khaleda’s Gulshan office. There vehicles, including one of private television channel ATN News, were torched near the BNP office just moments after Fakhrul concluded his address asking the party leaders and activists to peacefully return to their homes.
Another two vehicles—one of Massranga Television and another of Boishakhi Television—were also vandalised in the area at that time apart from explosions of several crude bombs.
Fakhrul claimed that ruling party cadres fired gunshots at the BNP chairperson’s office. “This incident proves that there’s no rule of law in the country and security of people and their property. The attack on the opposition leader’s office at Gulshan which in a diplomatic zone also proves the government has failed to maintain the law and order.”
Condemning the incidents, he demanded the arrest and punishment of those involved in the heinous acts.
The BNP spokesman also urged the country’s people to make the 18-party’s Tuesday’s hartal a success with their spontaneous response.
On Sunday night, unidentified bike-riding youths fired gunshots while passing by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office. However, no one was injured in the incident. UNB
