BNP enforces instant hartal in Thakurgaon

Local BNP enforced an instant hartal in the district on Monday evening protesting the arrest of BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

District unit general secretary Taimur Rahman announced the shutdown from a rally in front of the party office.

The BNP men brought out a procession in the district town as the news of the arrest of Fakhrul travelled to Thakurgaon. Later, they held the rally in front the party office from where the lockdown programme was announced.

Addressing the rally, Taimur said the hartal in the district will continue till 6 pm Tuesday when the countrywide daylong shutdown called by the BNP-led 18-party alliance will end.

Shops were closed and the vehicles went off the roads after the hartal was called at about 7 pm.

Police stormed into BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital on Monday evening and arrested 130 of its leaders and workers, including Fakhrul and joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. UNB
