BSD-CPB shutdown on Jan 16

Jan 9: The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and the Bangladesher Shamajtantrik Dal (BSD) will enforce the general strike from 6am to 12pm across the country on that day.

CPB chief Mujahidul Islam Selim made the announcement on Wednesday in front of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission here.
Earlier on Sunday, the opposition alliance had enforced a countrywide daylong shutdown on similar issue.
The government hiked prices of octane, petrol, diesel and kerosene for the fifth time on Jan 3 in a bid to cut down subsidy in the sector.
Following the price spiral, the Bam Morcha threatened to call the shutdown unless the government revoked the decision by Tuesday night.
The government had raised the price of kerosene and diesel by Tk 7 and petrol and octane by Tk 5 a litre.
Following the rise, the Bam Morcha in an emergency meeting announced the shutdown if the government did not undo the hike by the given deadline.
The CPB, BSD and Bam Morcha had observed a dawn-to-dusk nationwide strike on Dec 18 demanding quick conclusion of the ongoing war crimes trials and sought a ban on religion-based parties, including the Jamaat-e-Islami.
