CDA probe team yet to start work

The investigation committee of the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) has failed to begin its probe over the collapse of the Bhaddarhat flyover even after four of the seven working days given to it for the submission of the report have passed.
CDA had formed the four-strong committee on Nov 26 to find the reasons behind the collapse of the under-construction flyover’s three girders on Nov 24 night which killed at least 13 people and injured several others.
The committee was given seven working days and the deadline ends on Tuesday.
When contacted to know about the progress of the investigation, the head of the committee and the CDA’s Chief Engineer Nasir Uddin Mahmud Chowdhury on Sunday told bdnews24.com that the probe was yet to start.
He said, “The situation has taken place as the committee is yet to become full-fledged and because of several other reasons.”

The committee comprises of one representative each from the Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED), the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) and Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET).
Chowdhury said, “The CUET representative has been selected. The committee will begin work after representatives from the two other departments are selected.”
The official also confirmed that the deadline to submit their findings would be extended.
Apart from the CDA, Ministry of Housing and Public Works and the Chittagong district administration have also formed two other committees to look into the horrific incident.
However, the four-member technical committee formed by the Public Works Ministry to examine the under-construction flyover’s standard of work had collected samples from the debris at the accident spot on Friday.
One man was also injured in June this year after a girder of the same flyover had collapsed. There are allegations that the accidents were happening because of the CDA’s lack of supervision on the project.
