Daughters in represent Oikya Front, men barred from election

Participation of women candidates have been always limited in previous parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. The scenario has changed in forthcoming 11th parliamentary election. Women candidates from all the major parties are expected to play a big part to bag a seat in parliament of the country.

Few women candidates contesting for Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led 20 party alliances have set themselves apart from the rest for their efforts.In Sherpur-1 constituency, Dr Sansila Zebrin Priyanka, the youngest ever parliamentary candidate is running with sheaf of paddy for BNP.

Her father, Sherpur District BNP General Secretary was the expected frontrunner for BNP until his nomination got cancelled out for defaulting.Priyanka is currently acting as a lecturer in city’s Anowar Khan Modern Medical College and Hospital.

Bangabir Kader Siddique’s daughter, Kuri Siddique is contesting from Tangail-8 constituency for Krishak Sramik Janata League.Kader Siddique freedom fighter and leader of Oikyafront submitted nominations for Tangail 4 – Kalihati upazila – and Tangail 8 – Basail and Sakhipur upazilas but due to loan default he too is out of the election race whereas his daughter is still holding the baton.Kuri Siddique is garneting favours from especially female voters of Tangail-8 (Sakhipur-Basail) constituency.

Dr. Chowdhury Saima Ferdous, The daughter of jailed BNP candidate for Comilla 10 constituency, former lawmaker Monirul Haque Chowdhury who is also a teacher of Dhaka University herself is not contesting in the forthcoming election but is making strong appeal to the voters on behalf of him.She held a press conference on December 17 pleading to the voters that they vote for sheaf of paddy to elect her father, her passion and emotional speech drew everyone’s attention.
