Delhi in touch with Dhaka over Pranab visit

Ahead of Indian President Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to Bangladesh, New Delhi is in touch with Dhaka and monitoring the evolving situation in the wake of widespread violence that erupted after the International Crimes Tribunal awarded death penalty to Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee.Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai told media in the Indian capital that New Delhi had learnt from the Bangladesh government that the overall situation in Dhaka was calm.
Mukherjee is set to leave for Dhaka on Sunday on a three-day visit – his first to any country after taking over as President in August 2012.
The Indian President will receive the Bangladesh Liberation War Honour Award during the visit.
“The President is excitedly looking forward to his visit to Bangladesh,” Mukherjee’s Press Secretary Venu Rajamony told journalists on Friday.
Mukherjee will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Dhaka at a formal convocation ceremony. He is scheduled to travel to Bhadrabila in Narail district to meet the relatives of his wife Suvra Mukherjee, who will also accompany him.
The Indian President is also likely to visit Rabindranath Tagore’s home at Shilaidaha in Kushtia district.
