‘Food poisoning’ sickens 200 RMG workers

At least 200 workers of a readymade garments factory at Ashulia in Savar fell sick on Thursday night after eating food provided by the factory office.

Most of those workers of the Sterling Creations Limited factory at Beron in Ashulia have been admitted to local clinics.

Industrial Police (Ashulia zone) Deputy Director Ali Ahmed Khan told bdnews24.com that some 1500 out of the factory’s 3500 workers were on duty in the night shift on Thursday.

They were given bread, bananas and cakes as light food like everyday

around 7:30pm on Thursday, he said.

“But some of them immediately fainted. Many others fell sick,” he said.

Khan said the incident might have occurred because of food poisoning from the stale food. “Steps will be taken against the food supplier,” he added.

Most of the sick workers were admitted to Women and Children Health Complex. Its Assistant Manager Harun-ur Rashid told bdnews24.com that at least 150 workers have been admitted there.

In reaction to the incident, workers of that factory briefly blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway and reportedly vandalised some vehicles late Thursday.

The factory authorities could not be reached for comment. Bdnews24.com
