Govt official dies in crash

A government official was killed and two others received injuries when a bus hit an auto-rickshaw at Dhaka’s Paltan intersection Friday morning.

Liakat Hossain, 45, Food Inspector in Barisal division was killed in the accident which took place around 7:30am, Traffic Police Sergeant at scene Afzal Hossain said.

The accident took place on a Friday morning even though it is a public holiday in Bangladesh and the usual heavy-traffic Paltan area is almost deserted on holiday mornings.

The auto-rickshaw was coming from Zero Point side and the bus was on its way to the press club from Dainik Bangla, said the Sergeant. “The bus sped away.”

Auto-rickshaw driver and the two passengers—Liakat and his friend Golam Kibria—were injured in the accident.

Liakat was declared dead on being rushed to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital at around 8:15am, said DMCH Police Outpost Sub-Inspector Mohammad Bachchu Mia. “Kibria is still in the hospital.”

Liakat had come from Barisal, along with his wife Shammi Akhter and his aunt, to visit relatives, said nephew Shahin.bdnews24.com
