Islamists-police clash: 4 killed, 281 hurt

At least four people were killed and 281 others including cops and journalists injured during nationwide clash between workers of 12 like-minded Islamist parties and cops on Friday.

The clashes ensued as police obstructed process_ions brought out by them from mosques across the country after the Jumma congregation to protest blasphemous postings by some bloggers of the Shahbagh ‘Projonmer mancha

Leader of the Islamists and chairman of the Islami Oikya Jote Abdul Latif Nezami told the BBC that they did not oppose the Shahbagh demonstration staged since February 5, but took up protest programmes as some of the bloggers from there made postings against Islam, Allah, Prophet Muhammad and against different Islamic rites.

Paltan, Baitul Mukarram, Motijheel, Dainik Bangla More, Bijoy Nagar, Shanti Nagar, Kakrail, Karwan Bazar and Mirpur areas of the capital turned into a battlefield on Friday during the nationwide protest of Islamist activists.
Witnesses said leaders and activist of the parties brought out a procession from Baitul Mokarrom Mosque after Jum’a prayers.
Police obstructed the procession while it is heading to Shahbagh by parading through Paltan-Press Club.
After being obstructed, the agitators threw brick-bats on police.
At one stage. police fired rubber bullets and tear shell on them and held 20 people from Paltan, Kataban and Golap Shah Majar areas suspecting them as Jamaat men.

In Jhenidah, one  activist was killed and five others, including journalists, were injured during a clash between Islamists and law enforcers.
Two persons were killed and three received bullet injury during clash with law enforcers in Polashbari of Gaibandha district.
Meanwhile, an unidentified man was killed and 30 other injured during a clash between Islamists and police in Sylhet.
Seven journalists sustained bullet injuries as the activists of Islamic parties pelted stones and police shot rubber bullets and lobbed teargas canisters in city’s Paltan and Press Club area.
And 10 on-duty journalists were injured in Islamist activists attack in the port city’s Andarkilla area.
Banglanews correspondents reported — 100 people were injured in capital Dhaka, 10 in Chittagong, 10 in Pabna, 30 in Habiganj, 50 in Rajshahi, 20 in Gaibandha, 20 in Khulna, 50 in Ashulia, 30 in Sylhet and 18 injured in Tangail during the clashes. Law enforcers detained some 92 activists from different spots across the country.
Banglanews Correspondents also report—four Islamist activists were held from Pabna, 15 from Moulvibazar, 24 from capital, 35 from Rajshahi, 10 from Gaibandha, three from Nayaranganj and one was held from Munshiganj.
