Journalists will stage a hunger strike in front of the Jatiya Press Club on Sunday to mount pressure on the authorities to arrest the killers of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.
A statement, signed by the general secretary of the Dhaka Reporters Unity, Ilyas Khan, on behalf of all the journalists’ associations, issued on Saturday said the strike would continue for six hours starting from 10am.
President of a faction of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury had announced the programme from a rally on Dec 10.
He had said the next course of action would be announced on Dec 23.
On Feb 11, the news editor of Maasranga Television, Golam Mostofa Sarowar, alias Sagar Sarowar, and his wife and the senior reporter of ATN Bangla, Meherun Nahar Runi, were found murdered at their rented flat in the city’s west Rajabazar.
Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir announced on Oct 9 that eight people had been identified for the killing. Among them, five are accused in the murder of Dr Nitai. However, family members have cast their doubts on the findings.
Even though the minister named seven as professional killers and a family friend ‘Tanvir ‘for the murder’, the Mr Alamgir did not say anything about the motive. Runi’s brother also said they knew or heard of no-one by the name of Tanvir as the couple’s friend.
The press statement urged all the reporters to participate in the protest.
