Mahmudur’s arrest: Journos’ hunger strike Monday

Journalists will observe a token hunger strike on Monday protesting the arrest of Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman. Ruhul Amin Gazi, president of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists(BFUJ) announced the programme from a meeting jointly organised by BFUJ and Dhaka Union of Journalists(DUJ) in front of National Press Club on Saturday afternoon.“We will observe token hunger strike from 10 am to 2 pm protesting the arrest of Mahmudur Rahman and conspiracy to stop publication of Daily Amar Desh,” Gazi said.
Earlier on Friday, they announced to go on a nonstop sit-in on the National Press Club premises on Monday demanding release of Mahmudur Rahman.
Among others, BFUJ general secretary Shawkat Mahmud, DUJ president Abdus Shaheed, among others, addressed the programme. Police arrested Mahmudur Rahman from his Karwanbazar office on charge of sedition on Thursday morning. Later, he was taken on a 13-day remand in three cases.
Later, police raided the press of the vernacular daily in the city’s Tejgaon area on Thursday night and sealed off it. UNB
