Report on ‘shoot-at-sight’ order dismissed

Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir on Wednesday dismissed media reports on issuing the law enforcers ‘shoot-at-sight’ order against perpetrators of subversive acts.

“The law enforcers have been directed to take lawful steps to tackle subversive activities,” he said while talking to reporters after attending a meeting with senior Rab officials arranged on the occasion of the 9th founding anniversary of the elite force.

The Home Minister was replying questions from the journalists on the media reports that the law enforcement agencies were given ‘shoot-at-sight’ order to tackle subversive activities.

He said law empowers the law enforcers to open fire on any alleged saboteurs, if necessary. “The law does not restrict the law enforcers from firing,” he said.

About the reported provocative statement made by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia about army, the Home Minister said the government is considering taking action against her.

Asked what kind of action will be taken against Khaleda, he skipped a direct answer, saying time will say when and what kind of action would be taken against her.

Addressing a wayside rally in Bogra on March 17, Khaleda said, “I thank the army for not firing shots on the common people…They’ve the duty for the country. They can’t play the role of silent spectators… they can’t sit idle while people are getting killed. They’ll play their due role in time.” UNB
