Najmul sent to jail upon surrender before court

Dhaka, Jan 06 – A Dhaka court ordered to send former minister Barrister Nazmul Huda to the prison. Judge HM Ruhul Imran of Special Judge Court-3 of Dhaka passed the order denying his bail prayer. Earlier, Huda appeared before the court seeking bail in a bribe case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) in 2007.
The ACC on March 21, 2007, filed a case with Dhanmondi Police Station against Nazmul Huda and his wife Sigma Huda for taking Tk 2.40 crore as bribe from Meer Zahir Hossain, managing director of a construction firm.
On August 27, the same year, a special court sentenced Barrister Nazmul Huda to seven years' rigorous imprisonment and Sigma Huda to three years’ imprisonment.
The couple, later, filed an appeal with the High Court challenging the verdict. Following their appeal, the High Court on March 20, 2011, acquitted a couple of the corruption charges.
Later, the anti-graft watchdog filed an appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the High Court order.
The Appellate Division on December 1, 2014, scrapped the High Court verdict and asked for hearing the petition again. – Special Correspondent
