Oil spills in Karnaphuli as oil tanker hits barge

Chittagong, Dec 30: At least 500 liters of oil spilled into the
estuary of Karnaphuli River after an oil tanker collided with a barge
beside Bangladesh Navy`s Boat Club near Chittagong Port on Sunday
morning.However, no casualty was reported.
It could not be ascertained immediately how much area has been
affected due to the spill.
Two vessels, an oil cleaning vessel, of Chittagong Port Authority
(CPA) and a rescue one of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority
(BIWTA), rushed to the spot and repaired the hole created on oil
tanker `MV Nasihat` due to the collision.
The oil slick began as the hole was created on the Chandpur-bound `MV
Nahsihat` after it collided with a stationary barge, loaded with
goods, at Ghat No 15 near Chittagong Port`s Jetty No 18 at 7:30am,
Wahidur Rahman, radio control officer of Radio Control Room of
Chittagong Port, said.
However, the hole on `MV Nahsihat`was plugged and the ship was fully
repaired, port sources said.
They said the oil tanker was heading towards Chandpur after loading
diesel from an oil depot of state-owned Jamuna Oil Company Limited in
Chittagong Port area.
They confirmed that no crew members of either vessel were reported to
be injured.
