Police show 4 arrested over Biswajit’s murder

Police on Thursday informed a Dhaka court that they had arrested four suspects allegedly involved in the murder of Biswajit Das. But Home Minister M K Alamgir insisted that 11 arrests have been made in this connection so far.
The police submitted before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court that they had arrested Mamun Ur Rashid, Faruk Hossain, Kazi Nahiduzzaman Tuhin and Moslehuddin Moslem.
These four, however, were not seen in the photos of those involved in the murder published in the news media, but the police claimed they were seen in the video footage of the assault.
Mamun lives at the capital’s Dakkhin Khan’s Modhubagh area, Faruk is from the Airport Lane at the same area’s Purbo Parha, Tuhin lives at Demra’s Sarulia and Moslem is from Badda’s Moddhyo Parha.
Biswajit, 24, the owner of a tailor shop, was hacked to death near the Victoria Park in Old Dhaka during the opposition’s road blockade agitation on Dec 9.
The media which had run live video footage and published still pictures of the assault, blamed the murder on a group of activists of the Awami League’s student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League belonging to the outfit’s Jagannath University unit.
Police on Thursday said Mamun, Faruk, Tuhin and Moslem were arrested on suspicion under Section 54 of the Bangladesh Penal Code on Wednesday from the capital’s Kotwali Police Station area.
Sutrapur police station Sub-Inspector Mahbubul Alam Akhand pleaded before Magistrate Ashikur Rahman’s court to show the four as arrested in the Biswajit murder case. The Magistrate approved the plea.
Crime, Information and Prosecution Department’s Additional Deputy Commissioner at the court Anisur Rahman also confirmed that the four were produced before the court as arrested under Section 54.
Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukder, representing the state, informed the High Court earlier in the day of the arrest of one Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid in the same case.
Nahid was among the assailants whose picture had been published in the newspapers. The JnU authorities cancelled his certificate for his alleged involvement into Biswajit’s killing.
The university on Wednesday also took steps against four other students besides Nahid. Of them, Obhidul Quader Tahsin, a Psychology fourth year student, Rafiqul Islam Shakil, a History sixth semester student, and Noore Alam Limon, Political Science Masters student were expelled.
The other one, Philosophy student Emdadul Haque’s certificate was also cancelled.
But earlier on Thursday, Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir claimed 11 arrests had been made so far in this case, after claiming eight arrests on Tuesday. But police said then that only six people were identified until that time and anyone was yet to be arrested.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court’s Public Prosecutor Abdullah Abu had also declined producing anyone in the court over Biswajit’s murder until Wednesday afternoon.
According to the law, the arrestees must be produced before the court within 24 hours of their arrest.
Sutrapur police station’s SI Mahbubul Alam had filed the case over Biswajit’s murder with the station on the night of Dec 9. But the case did not mention any name of the accused.
