President’s demise: Condolences galore

Presidents, Prime Ministers, foreign ministers of different countries and foreign forums on Thursday expressed deep shock at the sad demise of President Zillur Rahman.

The Indian President and Prime Minister, Russian President, Singapore President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Malaysian Prime Minister, US Secretary of State, Canadian Foreign Minister, Japanese Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Nepalese President, Maldives President and Foreign Minister, Pakistan President and High Commission in Dhaka, Bhutan King and Prime Minister, Chinese President, Iran President and Foreign Minister, Thailand King and D-8 Secretary General Dr Seyed Ali-Mohammad Mousavi have so far expressed their shock at President Zillur’s death.

Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said he was saddened by the death of Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman.

“The Secretary-General extends his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of the President, the government and people of Bangladesh,” Ban’s spokesperson said in a statement on the UN website.

The President passed away on Wednesday afternoon at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital at the age of 84.

Expressing deep shock at the demise, Indian President Pranab Mukherjee said, “In the passing away of President Zillur the people of Bangladesh have lost a man of vision and a true son of the soil, who rose to the highest office.”

Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in his message to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, “President Zillur Rahman was patriot and a man of high ideals, who served his country and his people with utmost distinction over the decades.” UNB
