State counsel filed a petition with International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 seeking to send BNP leader Abdul Alim, who was under trial for crimes against humanity during 1971 liberation war, in safe custody.ICT-2 led by Justice Obaidul Hassan fixed Thursday to pronounce order over the petition after hearing.
State counsel Advocate Rana Dasgupta filed the petition mentioning that miscreants conspired to kill Abdul Alim and his life in on risk. So, he should be sent to safe custody.
As per the petition, we got information through Internet links that people conspired to murder Alim. The conspiracy was running during recent long march programme of Hefajat-e-Islam led-by Allama Shafi. The conspirators have already hired snipers from Pakistan to kill him.
He added: “If the killing plan is conducted, Jamaat-e-Islami will get chance to show that the Tribunal failed to ensure security of the detained. All the trials under the tribunals are like farce. As the news is a cause for concern, the ICT should grant safe custody for Abdul Alim.”
On May 3, 2012, the International Crime Tribunal-2 granted conditional bail to elderly BNP leader Abdul Alim, also former minister, on charge of committing crime against humanity during the liberation war in 1971.
Meanwhile, the tribunal-2 gave him some other conditions saying that his bail could be cancelled incase of violating those.
The conditions are Alim’s passport will be kept with the tribunal, he has to stay at his son’s Banani residence, he could not give any statement to mass media and could not contact with any plaintiff, witness of his case or any political party leader.
On June 11 in 2012, the tribunal framed 17 specific charges of crimes against humanity against Alim, which included genocide, murder of Bangalee civilians, and burying people alive.
On March 15 in 2012, prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Advocate Rana Dasgupta submitted formal charges against the BNP leader.
On March 22, the tribunal fixed March 27 for giving order on whether the charges take into cognizance or not against Alim.
On March 27, ICT took into cognizance the formal charges of ‘crime against humanity’ against BNP leader also ex-minister Abdul Alim for his role during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
