Shibir set to enforce hartal today

After three consecutive days’ nationwide hartal from Monday, the country goes into the grip of another shutdown as Islami Chhatra Shibir, the associate body of Jamaat-e-Islami, is set to enforce a countrywide daylong general strike on Thursday.Shibir called the shutdown on Wednesday in protest against what it said torturing its central president on police remand and demanding his immediate release.

On March 31, plainclothes police arrested Shibir chief Delwar Hossain from the city’s Shaymoli area and then showed him arrested in two cases.

Later, the Shibir leader was taken on a 14-day remand in the two cases filed over February 28 city violence.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday extended its support to Shibir’s hartal.

In a statement, Jamaat acting secretary general Rafiqul Islam Khan urged the country’s people to make the lockdown programme a success.

Meanwhile, the 36-hour nationwide hartal, enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance, ended on Wednesday amid clashes and crude bomb blasts at various places across the country.

The opposition alliance enforced the shutdown at 6am on Tuesday to realise its various demands, including the release of its arrested leaders and activists.

Earlier on Monday, Hefajat-e-Islam Bangladesh enforced a countrywide shutdown on Monday protesting the government obstructions to its Saturday’s long march programme and repression of its activists on their way to Dhaka. UNB
