Student who lost arm in bus rash driving fights for life

Dhaka, April 10 – Ill-fated Government Titumir College student Rajib Hasan, who lost his right hand in a road accident, has been put on life support at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) following deterioration of his health condition since early Tuesday.The on duty doctors including the medical board formed earlier for his treatment are concerned over the deterioration of his health condition, said doctors of DMCH.
“His brain condition is very critical… his condition went beyond the doctors’ control,” said Prof Mohammad Shamsuzzaman Shahin, head a seven-member medical board formed on Razib’s treatment.
Talking to Journalists, he said Razib had been improving significantly and he was supposed to shift from Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to normal bad. “But he has to put into life support at about 4:00am as his brain condition has been deteriorated suddenly,” he said.
Dr Shamsuzzaman Shahin, also head of orthopedic department of the DMCH, termed Razib’s condition “life and death”, he said his condition went beyond the doctors’ control.
The level of his consciousness has suddenly fallen to three to four. His brain has been hit even after he has been put into life support due to increase of internal pressure, he said.
He explained that though life of Razib is ticking away but his brain condition is very bad. It is for brain condition not for his hand, he added.
Earlier, talking to reporters over Razib’s health condition, the emotion-chalked medical board chief, could not check his tears and in a have voice he said we had to put him into life support when his condition was deteriorating.
The CT scan report of Razib was good even yesterday but his breathing problem started early hours of Tuesday. He was able to take normal breathing after nebulising him. But his condition has been deteriorated within a couple of hours, he said.
But we are concerned with his latest CT scan report. His GCS level has been fallen to three when a brain can work normally when its GCS level remain at 14 to 15.
Meanwhile, many doctors including vice chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Prof Dr Kanak Kanti Barua, medical board members and doctors of other departments visited Razib following the deterioration o his health condition.
After visiting Razib, Dr Kanak, also a neurosurgeon, said he has been given proper treatment in line with the ICU protocol.
He (Razib) has been given a new medicine for 24 hours and he won’t be gone under surgery as his condition is very critical, he said. Dr Kanak was accompanied by Chief Whip ASM Firoze during his visit. They sought blessing of countrymen for recovery of Razib.
Razib, a 2nd year student of Govt Titumir College, lost his right arm being pressed between two buses in the city on 3 April. He was going to attend his classes by a double-decker bus of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) and standing on the near gate dangling his right hand outside the overcrowded bus.
When the bus got stranded at the Sonargaon crossing near Panthakunja park, a Sajan Paribahan bus tried to make its way through the narrow space on between the BRTC bus and the footpath. However, Rajib’s right hand was pressed in between the two buses and got severed from the elbow. Being rescued, the victim had been taken to MH Samorita Hospital at Panthapath first then he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of DMCH.
Health minister Mohammad Nasim told the media on Thursday that the government would bear all the medical expenses of Rajib and will provide him with a government job. – Staff Reporter
