Teachers ‘assaulted’ at Rajshahi University

Rajshahi – A rough situation was created between teachers and Chhatra League activists in front of the residence of the vice-chancellor of Rajshahi University on Tuesday centring on a syndicate meeting of the university and some teachers have been ‘assaulted’.University registrar professor M Abdus Salam halted the meeting at around 11 am following the violence.
The syndicate meeting, the last one of the current VC’s term, started in the vice-chancellor’s residence. The university authority halted the meeting at around 11 am following the demonstration of ‘Durniti birodhi’ teachers.
‘Durnitibirodhi’ teachers staged a demonstration in front of the VC’s house demanding suspension of the syndicate meeting.
Some of the current and former activists of the Chhatra League took a position there before teachers came.
BCL men stopped teachers while they were heading to meet the vice-chancellor.
BCL men started altercating with the teachers in presence of police and the proctor body. Some teachers including the university proctor were allegedly assaulted by BCL men at the time.
One of BCL activists named Akash, hailing from the Meherchandi area near the university threatened to shoot the teachers with a gun.
Professor Sultan Ul Islam Tipu on behalf of ‘Durniti birodhi’ teachers said the university administration is trying to create trouble by bringing the outsiders there. The outsiders came there carrying sticks. The Vice-chancellor was trying to do more wicked things at the close of his term through a syndicate meeting.
When we tried to enter the residence of VC to meet him we were threatened to be shot. That means they carried weapons. VC called the goons, he added.
University proctor professor Lutfor Rahman said it’s a crime that they threatened the teachers.
University’s current and former BCL activists last Sunday started a demonstration demanding suspension of the university Finance committee’s meeting. Later, they locked up VC’s residence, admin buildings and the senate building of the university. – RU Correspondent
