Thailand keen to invest in Bangladesh

Thailand has expressed interest in investing in Bangladesh’s infrastructure and construction sectors along with extending its assistance in the fields of education, health-care, science and technology.
Visiting Thailand Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, after a meeting with Bangladesh premier Sheikh Hasina, said her country was also keen to assist Bangladesh in agriculture.
Hasina’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed journalists after the meeting.
He said Sheikh Hasina has thanked Shinawatra for her visit in the month of victory and said Thailand was an important friend of Bangladesh.
“The trade relation between the two countries would pick up up if Thailand grants duty-free access to medicine, jute, leather goods, ceramics and utensils produced in Bangladesh’,” Azad quoted Hasina as saying.
The Press Secretary said Hasina has called for Thai investment and claimed Bangladesh has the best environment for investment among the South Asian countries.
Shinawatra emphasised on increasing communication between citizens of the two countries, Azad said.
He said the Thai Prime Minister lauded development in various Bangladeshi sectors under the able leadership of Sheikh Hasina.
The Thai prime Minister talked of increasing financial partnership and bilateral assistance, the Press Secretary said. She also advocated more air and sea connectivity between the two countries.
Earlier the day, the two prime ministers held a meeting and discussed bilateral issues.
Hasina thanked Shinawatra for granting 40 Bangladeshi medical students scholarship between 2013 and 2017 and said Dhaka would provide scholarships for 40 Thai students.
Thailand’s first female Prime Minister, Shinawatra, came to Dhaka on Friday on a two-day trip.
