Thousands suffer on highways for tailback

A 45-km tailback was created on Dhaka-Chittagong highway stretching from Daudkandi toll plaza to Comilla Cantonment on Saturday, causing untold sufferings to commuters. The highway has been experiencing the tailback since Friday as thousands of people have been rushing home taking advantage of a three-day holiday, including that of Pahela Baishakh. A large number of vehicles got stranded on both sides of the highway till Saturday afternoon.
Passengers said now it takes minimum 10 hours to go to Comilla from Dhaka though it is a two-hour trip usually.
Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mainamati highway police, said the traffic is moving very slowly on the important highway due to the increased volume of vehicles due to the recent back-to-back shutdowns. “We are, however, trying our best to improve the situation,” he said.
