Dhaka, Mar 25 –Bangladesh crushed Sri Lanka by 90 runs in the 1st ODI to take 1-0 series lead in the three-match series started at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Saturday.
The first ODI win of this year came in away series, just a couple of hour before Bangladesh’s Independence and National Day, poured colour on the people to cheer the event with great a manner as they also carried the momentum of Colombo Test victory against Sri Lanka.This is the Tigers 5th ODI win against Sri Lanka in their 39th meetings, since April 1986, when a match saw no result.
Mashrafe’s man restricted the host Sri Lanka at 234 for all in 45.1 overs after posting a gigantic score of 324/5 in 50 overs where man of the match Tamim Iqbal hammered a century of 127 runs. Tigers’ all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and Sabbir Rahman spurred the team collection with their half centuries of 72 and 54 runs respectively.
On their chase of 325 runs, Dinesh Chandimal and Thisara Perera were the notable scorers for Sri Lanka with 59 and 55 runs respectively.
Sachith Pathirana (31), Asela Gunaratne (24), Milinda Siriwardana (22), and skipper Upul Tharanga (19) were the other double figure scorers for the side which elected to bowl first after winning the toss.
Mustafizur Rahman, who dismissed the Lankan last batter Thisara Perera, captured three wickets for 56 runs in 8.1 overs.
Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza made the first breakthrough in Lankan innings in the very 3rd ball of the innings sending opener Danushka Gunathilaka back with duck, keeping the host side on zero.
Mashrafe trapped Gunathilaka by lbw which finalised after DRS and continued pressure with two consecutive maiden overs.
The skipper, who dismally conceded 14 runs in 3 balls in the innings 40th overs as Thisara Perera hammered two successive boundaries and one six, captured two wickets for 35 runs in seven overs.
Debut Mehedi Hasan Miraz opened his ODI wicket account departing Kusal Mendis (4), was caught by Shuvagata Hom, from 2nd pair in his last ball of the 3r over at 15/2 in 6 overs. Miraz captured two wickets for 43 runs in 10 overs.
Shakib Al Hasan and Taskin Ahmed took one wicket each for 33 and 42 runs in eight and nine overs respectively.
Earlier, Tamim played an innings of 142 balls, featuring 15 boundaries and one over boundary, to complete his 8th ODI century and was caught by Danushka Gunathilaka off Lahiru Kumara’s bowling leaving team total at 289/5 in 47.5 overs.
After the departure of Tamim, Mosaddek Hossain and Mahmudullah Riyad played till the end to add unbeaten 24 and 13 runs respectively.
Tamim completed his ton taking a single off Lahiru Kumara’s bowling when Bangladesh’s collection was at 231/3 42.2 overs.
Shakib played an innings of 71 balls to fire four boundaries and one over boundary while Sabbir faced 56 balls to complete his 4th ODI half century, involving 10 boundaries.
Besides his individual score, Tamim played two worthwhile partnership innings in the 4th and 2nd wickets, pairing with Shakib and Sabbir.
Tamim paired with Sahkib in the 4th wicket for 144 in 23.4 overs that carried the team total to 264/4 in 45.5 overs from 120/3 in 22.1 overs, before Shakib was caught by Lakshan Sandakan off Suranga Lakmal bowling.
In the 2nd wicket, Tamim stayed with Sabbir to recover the early jolt playing a partnership innings of 90 in16.5 overs which carried the team figure to 119/2 in 21.3 overs, before Sabbir was caught by Upul Tharanga off Asela Gunaratne’s bowling.
After reaching 100 plus mark, Tigers suffered quick falter to reach 120/3 in 22.1 overs, as Sabbir and Mushfiqur Rahim departed from the crease within a span of four balls adding one runs.
Mushfiqur Rahim could have stay with Tamim in the 3rd wicket, but dismally departed with one run facing two balls only. Mushfiqur was caught and bowled by Lakshan Sandakan.
Bangladesh faced the early jolt losing Soumya Sarakr, was out for 10 to depart from opening pair, when the team collection was at 29/1 in 4.4 overs.
Suranga Lakmal grabbed two wickets for 45 runs in 8 overs while Asela Gunaratne, Lakshan Sandakan and Lahiru Kumara took one wicket each for 40, 45 and 74 runs respectively in 10, 8 and 8 overs.
The 2nd day-night ODI will be held at the same venue on March 28 while the 3rd match will be played at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo on April 1.
