Dhaka – River levels at some places are risinging fast and the country is likely to face severe flood soon, water experts have said. Waters of Teesta, Surma and Kushiyara rivers are flowing above danger level at five points.According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), rain occurred at most places over Arunachal prodesh, Asam and Meghalaya. The Brahmaputra in India’s Assam valley has already overflowed its banks over the past few days flooding huge areas.
According to Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) sources, the Indian authority has opened all the gates of Gazaldoba barrage—as a result huge areas of Teesta barrage went into flood waters.
At least 5,000 people of 10 villages have been affected due to flood water and the victims are leaving their homes for safer places.
People of Angorpota-Dohogram, Saniajan of Hatibandha, Goddimari, Singimari, Sirnanduna, Patikapara and char areas of Dawabari union parishad have become marooned due to floodwater.
The BWDB authority has already opened most of the gates of Teesta barrage to control the floodwater, BWDB sources said.
“We are trying to control the floodwater by opening 44-gate of Teesta barrage. Now water is flowing 20cm above the danger level,” Mostafizur Rahman, executive engineer of BWDB at Dalia point told this correspondent.
However, the authorities are yet to take any initiative to distribute relief materials among the affected marooned people.
When contacted Hatibandha upazila project implementation officer Ferdous Ahmed told this correspondent that they are already started taking information about flood affected people through local UP chairman.
Application has already been sent to the deputy commissioner for relief materials, he added. – Staff Reporter
