University Football: Fareast University emerge as new champions

Dhaka – Last year’s runners-up Fareast University emerged as the new champions in the Shahjalal Islami Bank Faraaz Gold Cup Inter-University Football Tournament beating South East University by 8-7 goals in tie breaker at the Bangabandhu National Stadium here on Sunday.The nerve-shattering final match between two teams was locked in a goalless position in the stipulated in the afternoon.

Fareast University custodian Shohag Miah helped his team to clinch the maiden trophy after foiling the last attempt of South East University taken by Toufiqur Rahman.

APS to the Prime Minister Advocate Saifuzzaman Shekor, Brazilian Ambassador to Bangladesh Joao Tabajara de Oliveira, Additional Managing Director of the meet’s sponsor Shahjalal Islami Bank M Shahidul Islam, Tournament Committee chairman Hassanuzzaman Khan Bablu and member secretary Sheikh Mohammad Aslam were present in the day’s final.

The champions Fareast University team received a prize money of Tk 2,00,000 while the runners-up South East University team got Tk 1,00,000 in addition to trophies and medals.

Besides, Mitul of the champions team was adjudged the man of the final, Inteshar and Pias of IUB named as the highest scorers jointly to earn golden boot, captain of the champions team Sujoy was adjudged the best player to receive golden ball, Shohag Miah of the champions side named as the best goalkeeper to receive golden gloves while State University earned the “fair play trophy” of the tournament.

Earlier on Friday, Fareast International University beat University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) by 1-0 goal while South East University defeated BRAC University by 3-0 goals in the semifinals at Kamalapur Stadium. UNB
