Dhaka – Bangladesh singed a bilateral agreement with Myanmar on Thursday to resume Dhaka-Yangon air connectivity after halting the air link between two neighboring countries in 2006.
Chairman of Civil Aviation Authority Air Vice Marshal Mahmud Hussain and Deputy Director of Civil Aviation department, Myanmar Win Swe Tun inked the deal at the Civil Aviation office in the capital’s Kurmitola from their respective sides.
As per the air services agreement, air fights can be operated every day on the Dhaka-Yangon route, which will boost the trade and tourism sectors, Mahmud Hussain told UNB.
Due to the agreement, all the private air fights of Bangladesh will be benefited and the flights operating on Dhaka-Bangkok and Dhaka-Kuala Lumpur routes can use Yangon as a transit, he added.
Civil Aviation Minister Faruk Khan, MP, foreign secretary Mohammad Shahidul Haque, civil aviation and tourism secretary Khorshed Alam Chowdhury, Director of Civil Aviation Department of Myanmar Tike Aung, Deputy Director Ne Win, Executive Director of Myanmar Airways International Myo Chit were, among others, present at the signing ceremony.
On January 16, 2012, an agreement to reestablish the air-link between the two countries was ratified. Then the agreement was approved by the cabinet on June 20, 2012.
Earlier on October 29, 2006, the air connectivity between the two countries stopped.
The Dhaka-Yangon air link was first established after an agreement between the two neighboring countries was ratified on August 3, 1977. – UNB
