Alleged rapist of minor girl shot, held in Lalmonirhat

Lalmonirhat, June 1 – Hours after he reportedly raped a minor girl, police shot and arrested a young man at Durakuthi in Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila early Saturday.
The arrestee is Sujon Mia, 25, son of Saidul Islam of Taluk Khutamar in the district town.
Police said Saidul took the eight-year-old girl to a bush behind the district court on Friday afternoon while she along with her mother was waiting for a bus to return to their village in Hatibandha Upazila, and raped her there.
Failing to find her daughter, the victim’s mother approached Sadar Police Station.
Later, police launched a drive and rescued the girl from the bush and took her to Sadar Hospital but failed to arrest the alleged rapist as he fled.
A team of police conducted a drive at Durakuthi around 1:45 am on Saturday to arrest Saidul, said officer-in-charge of the police station Mahfuz Alam.
As he tried to flee sensing the presence of law enforcers, police opened fire, leaving him injured.
He was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital with bullet wounds to one of his legs, said the OC. – UNB
