“Me and Robin [Thicke] the whole time said, ‘You know we’re about to make history right now,'” Cyrus said of her stage show in an exclusive interview with MTV, filmed on Monday.
The former Disney Channel actress appears in a quick video sit-down with the network, which is apparently part of a longer video documentary Cyrus is working on.
“I don’t pay attention to the negative because I’ve seen this play out so many times… Madonna’s done it. Britney’s done it. Every VMA performance, that’s what you’re looking for; you’re wanting to make history.”
Cyrus caught flack for her raunchy stage show – which started with a rendition of her party anthem “We Can’t Stop,” but ended with the 20-year-old singer stripping down to a nude, butt-bearing ensemble, “twerking” and grabbing all over the married “Blurred Lines” crooner, and simulating oral sex with a foam finger.
“What’s amazing is I think now, we’re three days later and people are still talking about it,” Cyrus said.
“They’re over thinking it… You’re thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. Like, I didn’t even think about it ’cause that’s just me.”
While Thicke only tweeted “that was dope” to Cyrus after their performance, another celebrity that came to her defense, echoing the “it’s been done before” sentiment, was Justin Timberlake.
“Listen, man, you know, it’s the VMAs. What did you guys expect?” Timberlake, 32, recently said in a radio interview.
“I like Miley. I like her a lot. I think, you know, she’s young. She’s letting everybody know that she’s growing up.”
Though in the past Cyrus has assured that her new image is nothing to be worried about, recently the singer spoke to Britain’s Sunday People newspaper, admitting she’s “messed up.”
