Bangladesh earn 2nd successive win beating PNG by 6 runs

Dhaka- Bangladesh Women’s team earned 2nd successive victory in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers defeating Papua New Guinea (PNG) by 6 runs in their postponed match in Dundee, Scotland on Monday.

The first match between two teams was halted last Saturday due to rain and scheduled for Monday.Earlier on Sunday, Bangladesh (47 for 2 in 8.2 overs) beat USA (46 all out in 19.1 overs) by eight wickets in the 2nd match at Arbroath in Scotland.

With the day’s feat, Bangladesh reached top slot in the point table securing full 4 points from two matches while hosts Scotland are in the 2nd slot with 2 points from their two matches, PNG in the 3rd slot with 2 points from two matches and the USA women are at the bottom after losing both their matches so far.

The Tigresses will now play their 3rd and final group match against Scotland on Tuesday at Dundee.Going to bat first in the day’s match, Bangladesh scored 103 for 8 in 16.3 before the match was stopped due to rain.

Fahima Khatun scored the highest 32 runs off 18 balls hitting 5 fours, opener Sanjida Islam scored 19 off 32 balls hitting 2 fours and Fargana Hoque scored 11 off 12 balls hitting one four for Bangladesh.

For PNG, all-rounder Sibona Jimmy bagged 3 wickets for 10 runs while fast bowler Ravina Oa picked up 2 wickets conceding 17 runs.

After the interruption, the revised winning target for PNG was fixed at 59 runs in 8 overs. But, the Tigresses restricted them for 52 for 5 in 8 overs to win the match.

Tanya Ruma scored the highest 12 while opener Naoani Vare and Konio Hera Oala added 10 runs each for PNG.For Bangladesh, Spinner Nahida Akter bagged 3 for 10 and fast bowler Ritu Moni picked up 2 for 9.

In the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier, Bangladesh have been placed in Group A along with Papua New Guinea, USA and hosts Scotland.

Two top teams from league-cum-knockout tournament will qualify for the final round of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia.UNB
