The host for the World Expo 2020, which is held after every five years for six months, will be decided on November 27 in Paris through voting. Dubai is bidding to host the event against Izmir in Turkey, Sao Paulo in Brazil, and Yekaterinburg in Russia.The UAE has selected the theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ to host the 2020 World Expo in Dubai. The World Expo, which attracts millions of visitors, has never been held in the Middle East, Africa and South East Asia in the event’s history.
Out of the all the cities, Dubai is the most important for Bangladesh as Bangladesh has very friendly relationship with the UAE and about one million Bangladeshis are working in the Gulf country from where billions of dollars of remittance flow to Bangladesh.
Diplomatic sources said Nepal has already made its support for Dubai public and the UAE would provide employment opportunity to 0.3 million Nepalese in the next three years. Dubai has already sought Bangladesh’s support in this regard. It is almost certain that Dubai would win the election, said a diplomat.
Following the November 27 announcement, and if Dubai is successful in its bid, it is expected the pace of development in Dubai World Centre will rapidly increase in order to meet infrastructure requirement needed for hosting the event. – UNB
