A truck driver and helper were beaten and the vehicle damaged by Golam Kibria Tipu, JP (Ershad) lawmaker and candidate for upcoming election during his campaign at Agarpur School area under Barisal-3 (Babuganj-Muladi) constituency on Monday morning.
Victims and witnesses said Tipu from his native union Jahangirnagor of Babuganj upazila started election campaign on Monday morning. When he reached near Agorpur School of Birshreshtha Jhangirnagar union, about one kilometer far from his village home, the road became narrow for passing the vehicle of lawmaker Tipu as a truck was engaged in loading fuel wood there at about 11:00 am.
Harun Haoladar, driver and Md. Sohag, helper of the truck, said, “When we trying to give side so that his vehicle could pass, the lawmaker coming out from his vehicle uttered obscene words, beaten us by stick and broke a looking glass of the truck.”
In reply of the question whether they will seek help of law against their assaults, the transport workers said, “We only seek justice from the Almighty Allah.”
Jahangir Hossain, fuel wood trader, also alleged that the JP lawmaker also assaulted him and they will take action in this connection after consulting with fuel wood traders association president Mantu Bepari.
Tipu was not available for comment despite repeated efforts to contact him over his mobile phone. –Correspondent, Barisal
