Production at Rangpur Sugar Mills Limited (RSML) has been continuing since December 27.
The RSML has set a target of producing 4,550 tonnes of sugar worth about TK 23 crore by crushing 70,000 tonnes of sugarcane during the current season.Of the total, some 1,083 tonnes of sugar was produced through crushing as many as 21,670 tonnes of sugarcane till January 12, official sources said.To run the mills smoothly, 7,000 acres were brought under sugarcane farming during the 2012-2013 season, general manager (agriculture) of
the mills Aleek Shom said.Earlier, loan and subsidy were distributed to sugarcane growers in the mills zone to encourage the farming of the crop.RSML Managing Director (MD) Abdul Khaleque said necessary measures were taken to fulfill the production target by running the mills for 53 days.In reply to a question, the MD said in last 2012-2013 crushing season the mills produced 2,738 tonnes sugar by crushing 49,500 tons of sugarcane. -BSS, Gaibandha
