Market buoyant after elections

Turnover on Dhaka Stock Exchange has again crossed Tk 8 billion after two months which, analysts say, is a sign that investors are regaining confidence.

“This is the result of the return of political stability,” said Mirza Azizul Islam, former chief of Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission.
DSEX on the country’s main bourse rose 56 points and shares of around Tk 8.35 billion changed hands on Wednesday.
The benchmark index on Chittagong Stock Exchange went up 120 points and the turnover was around Tk 720 million.
Indices and turnover have been going up on the country’s two bourses after the elections. DSEX went up by 350 points and CSEX by around 700 points.
“There is no destructive political programme like shutdowns and blockades, and it is unlikely that such programmes will resume within the next six months,” he said.
The situation had helped “investors regain confidence”, he said, adding, “This is the usual rule of the market.”
The turnover was at around Tk 8.35 billion on the prime bourse on Wednesday, up by Tk 1.24 billion over the previous day. Shares of Tk 7.11 billion had changed hands on Tuesday.
DSEX stood at 641 points on Wednesday, up by 56 points from Tuesday. All shares price index on the DSE rose 34 points.
Shares of Tk 720 million changed hands on the Chittagong Stock Exchange on Wednesday, up by Tk 80 million over Tuesday. The CSEX closed at 9115 points, up by 118 on Wednesday, compared with the previous day.
Among the traded shares, prices of 191 went up on the DSE, 83 went down and 21 remained unchanged.
Shares of Tk 6.5 billion have changed hands on DSE every day since the Jan 5 elections.
Its benchmark index lost 99 points in the two weeks prior to the elections. Average turnover was between Tk 4.77 to 5.12 billion every day.
