Attacks on lighterage vessels alarming, two bodies found

Police on Thursday confirmed that they recovered the body of a missing crew of lighterage vessel ‘Karnaphuli-5’ from the Monpura upazila of Bhola district.
The deceased was identified as Sheikh Enamul Haque Mukit, son of Mominul Sheikh of Attail village in Lohagara upazila of Narail district.
The body recovered from the Meghna River in Monpura on Wednesday was identified by his nephews Sohel Rana and Al Amin when it was brought to Kamalnagar Police Station in Laxmipur on Thursday morning.
Officer-in-charge of Kamalnagar M Humayun Kabir said locals spotted the body floating in the river on Wednesday evening. Later, they recovered the body and sent it to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital for autopsy, he added.
Earlier on Monday, police recovered the body of Noor Newaz, pilot of ‘Karnaphuli-5’, from the Meghna River in Ramgati upazila.
Seven of the crew of ‘Karnaphuli-05’ went missing in the aftermath of a pirate attack on them in the Meghna River on November 7.
On November 8, police rescued three of the missing workers from the river in Kamalnagar upazila of Laxmipur.
The rescued workers are Parvez Hossain, son of Jasim Uddin in Hatia upazila of Noakhali district, Mahbub Hossain, son of late Abdul Aziz of Shyampur village in Sadar upazila of Bhola district, and Zahidul Islam, son of Maksudul Khan of Charnarayan Malka Bhanga village in Faridpur district.
On Sunday, Parvez Hossain was shown arrested a case filed by ‘Karnaphuli-5’ owner against five people, including four of the vessel’s crew, in connection with the pirate attack.
On Tuesday, Parvez gave his confessional statement before a Laxmipur court under section 168 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
Two of the crewmembers and a suspect of the pirate attack still remain missing. – UNB
