Israfil Shaheen, Ruma Modok honored

Theatre, a prominent theater troupe in the country, organized a commemorative event on Monday at the National Art Plaza of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy to mark the 92nd birth anniversary of martyred intellectual Professor Munier Chowdhury.

At the program theater researcher Dr Israfil Shahin and playwright Ruma Modal received Munier Choudhury Memorial Award and Mohammad Zakaria Memorial Award, respectively.

Dr Gowher Rizvi, international affairs adviser to the prime minister, handed over the awards to the recipients. Israfil Shahin received Tk 50,000 and a crest and Ruma Modak received Tk 25,000 and a crest. The awards ceremony was also attended by thespian and honourary president of International Theatre Institute Ramendu Majumder and Theatre president Ferdousi Majumder.

After receiving Munier Chowdhury Award, Israfil Shaheen expressed his feelings, “I never worked for an award, but it is true that this type of achievement, like Munier Chowdhury Award, inspires us. Receiving Munier Chowdhury Award is a pride for me. I want to work for theatre until my death.”

Ruma Modok dedicated her award to the members of her theatre troupe Jibon Sangket of Habiganj. She said, “I am receiving this award on behalf of those theatre activists who are working for theatre overcoming obstacles of the mufassil town.”
