Dhaka – Canadian High Commissioner in Dhaka Benoît Pierre Laramée on Tuesday said the momentum around the Paris Agreement and climate action is unstoppable. UNB news agency reported
“Canada will continue to take a leadership role to tackle climate change and grow a cleaner economy,” he said while addressing a function at the Canadian High Commission Recreation Centre.
In September, Canada, China and the European Union will co-host a Ministerial meeting to move forward on the Paris Agreement and green growth, said High Commissioner Laramee.
“And in 2018, as G7 host, we will have a focus on climate change and clean energy,” he added.
High Commissioner Laramée said Canadians see the very real impacts of climate change and understand the need to take action to ensure a sustainable planet for future generations. “Canada remains steadfast in its commitment to the Paris Agreement.”
The High Commission of Canada to Bangladesh, in partnership with UNDP Bangladesh, arranged a photo exhibition and an interactive discussion session titled ‘Connecting People to Nature: Promoting Local Environmental Actions’ marking the ‘World Environment Day 2017.
During the session, the participants urged all the stakeholders to take initiatives to increase mass awareness and promoting local action on environmental conservation.
Deputy Country Director, UNDP, Kyoko Yokosuka said the World Environment Day is the UN’s flagship day when governments, cities, citizens and the private sector come together to act in support of the environment.
Over the years, World Environment Day has grown to be one of the largest global platforms for public outreach on the environment, celebrated by over a million people in well over 100 countries.
She said all the local action for conservation of environment or addressing of climate change should be properly recognized by the state and society.
Yokosuka said local people should be involved from planning to implementation for all kinds of environmental conservation. “There should be delicate balance between development and conservation.”
During the event, the local organisations working to environmental conservation shared their experience, success and lessons.
Environmental experts, activists, NGO representative, journalists and youth group members were present.
World Environment Day, conceived in 1972, is the United Nations’ principal day to mark global green issues and aims to give a human face to environmental problems and solutions. The theme of this year is ‘connecting people to nature’.
