Archaeologists in Egypt announced the discovery of 59 well preserved ancient coffins, sealed 2500 years ago.
The new discoveries unearthed in a vast necropolis south of Cairo (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Khaled El Enany Egypt’s tourism and antiquities minister said.
He added, “I have witnessed the opening of one of the coffins … the mummy seems as if it was mummified yesterday.”
The discovery of a carved bronze statue of the god Nefertum in Saqqara necropolis was also reported besides the mummies’ burial ground of Saqqara, the necropolis of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis.
These sealed coffins date back to the late periods of Ancient Egypt, probably the sixth or seventh century BC.
The excavations also include mummified birds, snakes, scarab beetles, and other animals, the discovery also includes troves of an ancient artefact.
This discovery is the first big announcement since the COVID-19 pandemic in Egypt.
