River commission act okayed

The cabinet Monday approved ‘National River Protection Commission Act-2013’ as a part of steps to save all rivers in the country.

The approval came from a regular cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Emerging from the meeting Cabinet Secretary M Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan confirmed it to the journalists in a press briefing.

Cabinet Secretary Muhammad Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said, “The commission will be comprised of one chairman and four members from different backgrounds including hydrologist, environmental expert and lawyer.”

“The law will help to take actions to protect the rivers from illegal encroachment, pollution and unscrupulous use of rivers as well as other water bodies,” he said.

The commission will basically provide advice to the government and coordinate the activities of different ministries involved with management of water and rivers, he said adding a rule will also be framed to take measures to protect other water bodies under the act.banglanews24.com
