14 diagnosed with anthrax in Sirajganj

At least 14 people have been detected to be carrying the germs of anthrax at Raghunathpur village in Raiganj upazila.
The district civil surgeon’s office confirmed the presence of the viral disease in their bodies through a medical test on Monday.
The affected people are Hashi Begum,30, Sazeda Khatun,29, Hannan Ali,27, Sara Khatun,40, Chameli Khatun,35, Nejber Hossain,27, Jainab Khatun,36, Mamun Hossain,25, Shah Alam,22, Mogrob Ali,45, Abul Hossain,38, Parul Khatun,17, Abul Kashem,30, and Rupa Khatun,9.Sirajganj civil surgeon Mainuddin said the 14 people were found to have been attacked with anthrax
as they prepared the meat of a
cow of one Shaheb Ali, infected with the deadly disease caused by bacterium Bacillus anthracis at Raghunathpur village two weeks back.
However, symptoms of the disease started appearing in their bodies after seven days.
The District Health Department and Upazila Livestock Department gave them treatment locally, while Hashi Khatun was admitted to Bogra Mohammad Ali Hospital in a critical condition.
A medical team from the health directorate in Dhaka had already visited the village, he added.- UNB
