150 imported cargo containers drop into Bay from vessel

Dhaka, June 30 – A Dhaka Pangaon bound import container-laden cargo vessel from Chittagong port on Sunday lost 43 containers into Bay of Bengal near Hatiya Channel due to rough sea.
Every day over 150 container vessels and oil tanker carry goods from Chattogram port to Pangaon using the route.
The vessel is ‘KSL Gladiator’ of Karim Group’s Karim Shipping Lines was carrying a total of 83 containers which was 147 TUEs (twenty equivalent units) and the accident took place around 8:30 am while the vessel was crossing Hatiya channel in Noakhali.
However, Shipping Line and Chattogram port could not confirm what types of goods were inside the containers.
SM Shah Alam, director of Karim Shipping Lines told The Independent, “Due to the heavy swelling in the vessel was started rolling and bent down. When it’s bent down about 43 containers fell into the Bay of Bengal.”
“Sine morning due to heavy rolling in the sea no vessel was moved in the routes, so we could not confirm either these lost containers would create any problem in moving vessels in the route or not however, we have issued cautionary for the vessels which would visit through the route, said Mohammad Selim, deputy director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BITWA) in Chattogram.
“A BIWTA vessel Dhruv Tara started to sail at around 3 pm to the accident spot for marking the spot of danger for other vessels due to the accident,” added Selim.
“The containers were floating towards ashore of Bhashanchar near to Hatiya channel. We are monitoring the matter along with the vessel owners” added Selim.
“The shipowner is responsible to rescue the containers if they would fail to rescue, BIWTA will float a tender to rescue the wreck contrivers,” added Selim
