2 unauthorised Ctg shipyards evicted

Two illegal shipyards built by destroying coastal forests at Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong district were evicted by the Authorities on Monday.
The two shipyards — SK Steel and SK Ship Breaker — were built illegally on lands under coastal forests in the upazila. Forest officer SM Monirul Islam said M Nazim Uddin built the two shipyards on about 14 acres of land in the coastal forest.About 15,000 were logged off when the establishments were built back in 2009, he added.
In response to a petition of the Forest Department in this regard, a full bench of the High Court on October 6 last year ordered removal of the shipyards, and plant threes in the area.
Later, the High Court set the deadline for the removal by February 27 this year.
Forest officials said there still remain a number of structures of different size under the two illegal shipyards in the area.
The removal of all the structures will take one or two days more, they added. – UNB
