3 Rohingyas one suspected drug peddler killed in ‘gunfights’

Cox’s Bazar, June 7 – Three Rohingya youths were killed in an alleged gunfight with police in connection with the kidnap of a minor girl in Teknaf Upazila while a suspected drug peddler was killed in Comilla on early Friday.
Police identified them as Ukhiya Rohingya camp residents Shamsul Alam, 35, and Nur Alam, 21, and Leda Camp resident Habib, 20.
Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, said a three-year-old girl was abducted several days ago. The kidnappers had also demanded Tk 5 lakh as ransom.
Police launched drives to rescue the girl after her family approached for help. The kidnappers released the girl on June 2, the OC said.
The Rohingya men were arrested at 11:30 pm on Thursday for their suspected involvement in the kidnapping, Pradip said.
After interrogation, police took the suspects with them to an area behind the Leda Camp in Teknaf around 1:45 am to recover firearms.
A number of alleged criminals, who were staying there, opened fire as soon as the police reached the spot and triggered a skirmish, the OC said.
The men were killed in the ‘gunfight’, the police officer claimed, adding that they also recovered three light guns and eight cartridges.
Comilla ‘gunfight’
In another reported gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) a suspected drug dealer was killed at Ghilatoli along Shahpur bordering area in Adarsha Comilla Sadar Upazila early Friday.
The deceased was identified as Helal Uddin, son of Sundar Ali of Bajgadda in the Upazila.
Tipped off, a team of BGB-10 conducted a drive in the area around 3am, said Lt Col Abu Mohammad Mahiuddin, commanding officer of BGB-10.
Criminals opened fire when the border guards approached. At one stage, Helal was caught in the line of fire and sustained gunshot wounds.
Later, he was taken to local hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
BGB also recovered 3,000 Yaba pills from the possession of Helal. – UNB
