Dhaka, Dec 13 – Bangladesh on Sunday reported 32 more Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the fatalities to 7,052.
Also, 1,355 new cases were reported during the period, pushing the country’s infection tally to 490,533.
The mortality rate, however, stood at 1.44%, said the Directorate General of Health Services.
So far, 420,896 patients – 85.80% – have recovered.
Bangladesh’s Covid-19 death toll crossed the 7,000-mark on Saturday. The country reported its first cases on March 8. And the infection number reached the 300,000-mark on August 26.
The first death was reported on March 18 and the death toll exceeded 6,000 on November 4. But it took only five weeks for the death toll to climb to 7,000 from 6,000.
Until now, 2,969,630 tests have been carried out and 16.52% of the patients turned out to be positive.
Bangladesh is seeing 2880.30 infections, 2471.40 recoveries, and 41.41 deaths per million.
Global situation
With the Covid-19 situation getting worse around the world, the overall confirmed cases crossed 71 million on Sunday, according to Johns Hopkins University.
The global caseload stood at 71,792,772 and death toll at 1,606,685.
The US was the worst-hit country with 16,067,031 cases and 297,843 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
India reported 9,857,029 cases and 143,019 fatalities and Brazil’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 181,123.
Meanwhile, the developers of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine said it is 96% effective and is likely to offer two-year-long protection against the novel coronavirus.
Registered by Russia on August 11, Sputnik V became the world’s first Covid-19 vaccine.
The vaccine was developed by the Gamaleya National Research Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology. – UNB
