35 KM long tailback at Dhaka-Tangail highway

Traffic is almost at a standstill on a 35-km stretch from Gazipur’s Chandna intersection to Tangail’s Gorhai.
Meanwhile, movement of vehicles is also very slow on the 21-km stretch between Gazipur’s Chandra to Nabinagar.Bangladeshi Muslims will celebrate one of their biggest festivals, the Eid-ul Azha on Friday.
A huge number of people left Dhaka after office hours on Wednesday amid rains, which contributed to the heavy traffic seen on the highway to North on Thursday morning.
Cattle-lladen trucks, broken down and stuck on the highway, have also added to the woes.
Traffic was disrupted for quite some time early on Thursday after a bus and truck collided at Tangail’s Jamruki area, said Gazipur Traffic Police Assistant Superintendent Md Shakhawat Hossain.
Meanwhile, a bus and a cattle-loaded truck also went out of order in Tangail, blocking a lane of the highway for quite a while.
Traffic once again started to move around 8:30 am, but at a snail’s pace.
On the 10-km stretch between Tongi and Chanda on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, traffic is rather slow.
Meanwhile, the rush on highways are expected to build up more as thousands are gathering at the bus terminals in Dhaka on Thursday morning to head for hometowns with only just a night left before the Eid.
Railway stations and the launch terminal in the capital are also crowded with thousands of people. – Agencies
