353 hectares brought under onion, green chili cultivation

Some 353 hectares of land have been brought under onion and green chili cultivation in the district in the current season.
Department of Agricultural Extension sources said of the total land, 10 hectares were cultivated in five metropolitan thanas in the city, 10 hectares in Rupsha upazila, 17 hectares in Batiaghata upazila, nine hectares in Dighalia upazila, six hectares in Phultala upazila, 154 hectares in Dumuria upazila, 40 hectares in Terokhada upazila, 17 hectares in Dakop upazila, 70 hectares in Paikgachha upazila and 20 hectares in Koyra upazila.DAE Deputy Director M Abdul Aziz said that 1,500 tonnes of onion and 450 tonnes of green chili would be produced here if favourable weather prevails.According to final report of DAE, 1,396 tonnes of onions were produced in 140 hectares and 383 tonnes of green chili were produced in 167 hectares in Khulna in the 2012-2013 years.Abdul Aziz said the farmers are showing interest to cultivate onion due to its high price in the market. -BSS, Khulna
